The study of the Bible in its historical context - with a focus on the archaeology, history, geography, customs , culture, and even the languages of the ancient Middle East. WE ask what did they understand THEN - the original intent of the Lord - so that we can expand and enrich our understanding NOW and thus become true disciples of Adonai Yeshua as in John 8:31-32.

In part 3 we focus on the phrase “the end(s) of the earth.” If you are Jewish and lived then, in the beginning of the 1st century A.D., how might they have understood this phrase? It is critical since Jesus says He wants His disciples to go there, go to the “ends of the earth.” We will then consider Paul. He is one amazing example of a disciple who also was called to go, and that is what Paul did. In other words Paul was a disciple who was sent out and so Paul was an apostle. There is one event in Paul’s many travels, however, that so relates to Jesus’ words in Acts 1:8 that we have been focusing on. It looks as if Paul followed Jesus’ example to a T.

In part 2 we study His word in a deeper way. We need to see other examples of what it was like to be a disciple of a rabbi in Jesus’ day. Moreover, what is it like to be a disciple of Jesus! He’s God. How can we be like HIM?
But, then there’s disciples who are called apostles – one’s sent out. Jesus says to us since the Father has sent Him so too Jesus sends us. YES!! That is being a disciple of a rabbi. Jesus was sent so we are sent. But, not all are sent. Most disciples need to stay and be ready. Whether you are a disciple who stays or one sent out, we need to be ready to do the impossible when Jesus asks.

Lesson 1 Part 2 –
In this lesson we again put the Bible into its historical context; we reconnect to the Jewish roots of our faith. We ask ourselves is the church made up of converts and disciples and apostles. If so what is the difference? Aren’t disciples ones who believe that Jesus is Lord and are saved by grace? Are pastors then apostles? In Jesus’ day the concept of what was a disciple and what was an apostle was clear. We need to study what those first disciples understood. We need to grasp what they saw and what they heard and what they experienced. Once we do our understanding will become so enriched and expanded. We will see what Jesus wants of them THEN and this means what He wants of us NOW.

In part 2 we get to the gospel that would make sense to those first disciples. For them something was not working. It is probable that in Jesus’ day there was a debate as to how one’s INTENTIONAL sin was cleansed and forgiven. The answer was not in the Torah, the main five books of the Bible in Jesus’ day. That the Torah was missing something is understood by the great scholars of Judaism and the writer of the book of Hebrews, more than likely a deeply religious Jewish disciple of Jesus.

LESSON 1 PART 1
What is the Gospel? Oh sure anyone of us can write up the definition. But, what did it mean to the disciples - the first ones with Jesus? Did it mean the same thing? Again, let's study His word in its historical and cultural context. As we do we will try and hear as the first hearers heard and saw and understood. Then, our understanding of the word of the Lord and the gospel will be enriched. Our minds will see the amazing foundation this gospel has once placed back into its Jewish roots.

THE STORY OF JOSEPH - lesson 9
GOD'S PARADIGM OF SALVATION OF THE WORLD
In previous lessons I mentioned that Dr. John Currid is a main resource for this series, “The Gospel According to Moses: Genesis.” This is also true for the series on Exodus as well. He has an amazing Torah commentary series that I use as a research and study tool. The reason is that Dr. Currid is an expert renowned Egyptologist and Bible historian. In his commentary he really helps us reconnect to the culture of those days to understand God’s word in context. One resource that he has is his book, “Against the Gods.”
In this book Dr. Currid shows that God attacks Egypt, its religion, its gods, again and again in the Torah using His own word as a polemic - a strong written or spoken attack against someone else's opinions, beliefs, practices, etc. You can study se key examples of this concept in podcasts and vidcasts from Light of Menorah. Here's links to several.

As I mentioned in this podcast I will give you a link to get your FREE copy of Dr. Currid’s book, “Against the Gods.” I highly recommend it for serious Bible students who want to go beyond simply reading the Bible but do actually study His word so as to expand and enrich our understanding of God’s word and to strengthen us a His true disciples. You can not be a disciple, a true disciple as in the culture of Jesus’ day, without studying His word and not just read His word. So, here’s the link to download Dr. Currid’s book in PDF format.
Another link you may find interesting is a scholarly article from Dr. Ken Kitchens. His article is on the ancient papyrus found in 1955. Tis papyrus details Egyptian prison in the Middle Kingdom of ancient Egypt or between 2040-1782 B.C. This papyrus is archaeological proof of the words we read in the saga of Joseph and his time in prison.

THE STORY OF JOSEPH - lesson 8
GOD'S PARADIGM OF SALVATION OF THE WORLD
The connection between Joseph and Jesus is too awesome. I recommend the following video on You Tube. It is a great intro to this concept of Joseph being a paradigm of the Messiah; he is a prototype of Messiah Jesus. Check out this short video at this link - https://youtu.be/QQKadh0fVCo?si=5ltTxeA6TSB2COZu
The resource you have to have is the book by Elhanan ben Avraham of the Christian (Messianic) teaching ministry, Netivyah - the way of the Lord.
His book is entitled, "Mashiach ben Yosef," or "Messiah the Son of Joseph. It is available at the ministry website in the STORE. Here's the link to Netivyah - https://netivyah.org/
Elhanan goes through chapters 37-50 of Genesis, the complete saga of Joseph, and connects it events and situations in the New Testament that clearly show the Lord did this on purpose. Joseph is a "picture" of what the true coming savior of the world would be like. And in this lesson we will continue to see how Joseph and Jesus are so amazingly connected by the Lord's inspiration He gave to Moses to write this in Torah.
A second major focus in lesson 89 is the phrase, SAVED BY GRACE. So many today say we are saved by grace and do not need to do the law like Jews. We're saved by grace and they imply all we need to do is now live as believers with no other responsibility. That isn't true. We'll see this brought out in Joseph's life. He was saved by grace for a purpose. The same for so many Bible characters like Moses or Ruth or David and even all Israel. This is a common aspect of God's covenant with His people and US. Paul teaches this in Eph. 2:8-10. All Paul is doing is teaching a concept so common throughout the Hebrew Scriptures, the Old Testament. Here's those verses ...
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (Eph 2:8-10)
We'll see that the Lord has chosen each of us. We're saved by grace. But, He did this since He also has works, tasks, a purpose for each of us. Saved by Grace?? You bet. But that is only the beginning. Now you have work He wants you to do.

THE STORY OF JOSEPH - lesson 7
GOD'S PARADIGM OF SALVATION OF THE WORLD
In this lesson Joseph is being seduced by Mrs. Potiphar. I mentioned in the podcast that adultery in ancient Egypt can result in the death sentence for the married woman and the man who is not her husband. On top of that rape is also a sever crime and the man would suffer death by burning. Here’s a link to a scholarly source that goes into crime and punishment in ancient Egypt - https://www.egypttoursportal.com/en-us/blog/egyptian-civilization/crime-punishment-in-ancient-egypt/
Once again in this event of Joseph resisting Mrs. Potiphar’s advances, we see how this connects to Jesus. Once again, as before, we see that the Lord is giving us NOW this amazing fact of Joseph being a paradigm of Jesus. Joseph is a “Savior Prototype.” As before here are resources to study this in more depth.
Once again we join the rabbis of old who recognized something truly amazing is going on. The Lord is using PARADIGMS or another way of saying the same thing is the Lord uses patterns, templates, or models. The rabbis have a saying for this ...
חיי האבות הם סימנים לבנים
Kahyay HaAvot Hem Seemaneem L’Bahneem
The lives of the fathers are signs for the sons
In this lesson we really begin to see that Joseph is a MODEL of what it means to be the savior of the world. It is like Joseph is wearing a mask to make himself look like someone else; Joseph "looks like" Jesus the true savior of the world.
For more resources to study this in more depth check the links below.

The Lord’s Prayer - Lesson 9 - Passed, Failed Matt. 6:13
Monday Jan 08, 2024
Monday Jan 08, 2024
This is the last lesson in the podcast series on the Lord's Prayer (in Hebrew - HaTehfeelah Adonai) which He gave to us, His disciples, and we can now call it, HaTehfeelah Talmidim, the Prayer of the Disciples. We will focus on Matt.6:13 and once again return to the 1st century A.D., the days of Yeshua HaMashiach, Jesus the Messiah (the Christ), and try and hear what His disciples heard. We will try and understand what they understood. We will study to see like they did.
The main focus of the lesson will be on the beginning phrase in Matt. 6:13, "and lead us not into temptation ..." (NASB). For us the English word the translators use "temptation" seems to relate only to that which might entice us to sin or evil. Temptation to us seems to focus on the evil desire to commit sin and go against Adonai, the Lord. However, the translators use this word in many places in the Bible to mean testing or trials or difficulties. So, what's going on in Matt. 6:13? Does it mean that God may come to us to lead us into situations where He knows we will be tempted to commit sin, to do evil? Or, are the translators using it as it relates with a different concept?

The Lord‘s Prayer - Lesson 8 - Debts & Sins & Debtors & Sinners
Sunday Jan 07, 2024
Sunday Jan 07, 2024
(Note - it is highly recommended that you listen to lesson 1 of this series on the Lord's prayer. I provided the link below).
I remember a time when I had hurt someone in one of my classes. I reacted to their opinion on a specific issue very harshly. Later I did learn from others in the class that 1) they did not appreciate my intense reaction to this person and 2) they knew this person was hurt and angry with me and 3) they understood why I got so angry but it was not the proper way of handling the situation. Needless to say, I hurt someone with my words. It reminded me me of ...
"The good man brings out of his good treasure what is good; and the evil man brings out of his evil treasure what is evil. But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned." (Mat 12:35-37)
Ouch! His Spirit was working in me telling me that I sinned. Something needed to happen.
On one hand, this person I hurt may have forgiven me "in his heart." He may have done this based upon what Jesus teaches that ...
"My heavenly Father will also do the same to you, if each of you does not forgive his brother from your heart." (Mat 18:35)
Many of us do this as Christians today. Someone hurt us, abused us, sinned against us and we forgive that person "from our heart," but the one who hurt us doesn't know it. For us it is a way we think we are listening to Rabbi Yeshua and living as true disciples.
On the other hand, even though this person I hurt may have "forgiven me in his heart," and I didn't know it, I was dealing with the Father and through His Spirit I was being plagued with guilt that I have not gone to this person, confessed my sin, repented, and asked for this person's forgiveness. I had already done this with the Lord. I knew I was forgiven. But, the Lord would not let me off the hook! Why? Because He taught us this ...
"Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering." (Mat 5:23-24)
He didn't mean to seek forgiveness from Him and let it all go. NO!! He is teaching clearly that I need to go to the person, confess, repent, and seek their forgiveness. I did go to that person. I did confess, repent, and I asked for this person to forgive me. I was forgiven by that person. I must say this was one of the most difficult things I have ever done. It was easy to go to the Father and confess and repent and seek forgiveness. But, doing that with the person who I sinned against, that is entirely a different matter.
So, we now return to the Lord's Prayer -
תפילת האדוי - HaTehfeelah Adonai
We will focus on the verse Matt. 6:12 where we pray that the Lord will forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Why use the word debt or debtors? Why didn't Jesus use the word sin and sinners? Besides that it seems as if Jesus is showing us that if we want to be forgiven by the Lord we first need to forgive. Is that what this all means? Once again, we are reading in English translated from the Greek which is translated from the Hebrew and it comes out of a totally Jewish culture of 2000 years ago. Is it possible then as we put this verse into its historical context that things will begin to make real sense? Answer! You better believe it. Moreover, we will see how it relates to the situation I described from my own life.
